Cobh Tri Club
September 11th 2016
The “Jailbreak Triathlon” is Cobh Triathlon Clubs flagship event and will take place on Sunday September 11th in our harbour town of Cobh. This is a Triathlon Ireland National Series sanctioned event with Olympic distance only this year.
The Olympic distance consists of a:
- 1500m swim from the Spike Island- “Ireland’s Alcatraz”- a former prison Island to the picturesque town of Cobh on the Great Island,
- 40km relatively flat, fast and technical cycle,
- Followed by a flat scenic run along the waterfront.
This race is one of a kind in this part of the country. Where else do you get to “Jailbreak” from a former prison and swim across the world’s second largest natural harbour? The harbour is steeped in Maritime history in particular its association with the Titanic and Lusitania sinking’s.
Its location assures spectator support is second to none as the start and finish of the race is centrally located in the town.
The event has received great feedback from both established and up and coming triathletes. This year competitors are some of Ireland’s best known and respected Triathletes including Trevor Woods & Chris Mintern. Some of Cork’s finest sportswomen will also be competing including Joyce Wolfe & Sonia O’Sullivan!
Registration is still open for the event and is available on both Triathlon Ireland and Sports Timings Web Pages.
(Please note that this event is a TI sanctioned event. If persons wish to participate they must possess a TI card or you will have to purchase a one day licence from Triathlon Ireland. Wet suits are also compulsory for this event.)
